Jamaica
Ewarton, Saint Catherine, Jamaica
July 5-28, 2009
The island of Jamaica was discovered by Christopher COLUMBUS in 1494 and settled by the Spanish early in the 16th century. The native Taino Indians, who had inhabited Jamaica for centuries, were gradually exterminated, replaced by African slaves. England siezed the island in 1655 and a plantation economy - based on sugar, cocoa, and coffee - was established. The abolition of slavery in 1834 freed a quarter million slaves, many of which became small farmers. Jamaica gradually obtained increasing independence from Britain, and in 1958 it joined other British Caribbean colonies in forming the Federation of the West Indies. Jamaica gained full independence when it withdrew from the federation in 1962. Deteriorating economic conditions during the 1970s led to recurrent violence as rival gangs created by the major political parties evolved into powerful organized crime networks involved in international drug smuggling and money laundering. The cycle of violence, drugs, and poverty has served to impoverish large sectors of the populace.
This will be our fourth team to Jamaica in four years. The 2009 TIM team will be ministering in the community of Ewarton which is a couple of hours northwest of Kingston. Ministry opportunities may include Daily Vacation Bible School, community outreach and some ministry in local churches. You will live at a mission house but will spend most of your time up close with the children and other people of the community of Ewarton . Play with children, do DVBS, impact the community!
Many parents in Jamaica work long hours just to make ends meet. This leaves children running free and left to their own devices... which often leads to trouble. Last year's team ministered to some 1100 children in 3 weeks. If you love kids, Jamaica, (and TIM in general) is for you!

Calgary
July 5-28, 2009
Right now there are thousands of homeless people in the city of Calgary, Alberta. Although some may have chosen this way of life, many did not. Jesus told his disciples in Matthew that when they fed the hungry, clothed the naked, visited the imprisoned, helped the poor, it was as though they were doing it to him. Come and minister to this important and too often forgotten segment of society. You will not be the same.
Outreach opportunities may include working at drop-in centres, soup kitchens, food banks, street outreach, building projects, or other inner-city related ministries. Final details will be established closer to the date.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 15/2009
COST: Approximately $650-$750 (to be finalized shortly) (includes training camp and debrief, transportation, outreach).

The Vision of Teen Impact Missions...
... is to see teenagers embrace and grip Biblical Christianity for themselves and walk before God and man setting an example in faith, conduct and purity. (1 Timothy 4:12). We exist to complement and partner with local churches in equipping and preparing youth and young adults to be leaders and to be salt in their communities, province, Canada, and among the nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. |
From The Director:
To experience the extraordinary, you need to start with the ordinary. To experience the supernatural, you need to start with the natural. Many heroes throughout history were simply that... ordinary, or natural. The difference was that they didn't stay there. They stepped out in faith, believing God's promises to be true! They took His commands seriously and desired to reach a lost and dying world. God isn't looking for someone who knows it all or has it all together. He's looking for people who have only two abilities - vulner-ability and avail-ability. Are you willing to be stretched? Are you willing to go beyond your comfort zone? Are you willing to let God take your natural and ordinary self and turn it into something supernatural and extraordinary? Take a step! Come join TIM! Come experience the IMPACT!
